Drug Uses

Cleocin is used for treatment of serious infections caused by certain bacteria. It is not used to treat meningitis.

How Taken

Take Cleocin with a glass of water as directed by your doctor. Take Cleocin with or without a meal. Cleocin works best if it is taken at the same time each day. To clear up your infection completely, continue using Cleocin for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

More Information

If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Cleocin should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Storage

Store Cleocin at 69 – 77 °F (20 – 25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Cleocin out of the reach of children.

Warnings/Precautions

Before taking Cleocin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Cleocin, if you have diarrhea, a gastrointestinal (bowel) disease, liver disease, or are allergic to tartrazine, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Cleocin during pregnancy. Cleocin is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you are using Cleocin, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Cleocin. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Cleocin if you have antibiotic–associated colitis, Crohn`s disease, ulcerative colitis, or meningitis. If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Cleocin is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold). Long–term or repeated use of Cleocin may cause a second infection. You may need to start another medication to treat the second infection. Contact your doctor if you suspect a second infection. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of Cleocin and might require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment. When Cleocin is used in children under 16 years of age, appropriate monitoring of organ system functions is recommended.
